The Region of Waterloo has released the data on the most accident-prone intersections in the Tri-Cities and the Townships. If you’d like to see the full report click here and skip forward to page 221.
Staff at the Region used the assessment to rank the top 20 pedestrian collision locations, the top 20 cyclist collision locations, and the top 100 vehicle collision locations. The overall trend for the last 10 years is encouraging. Annual injury collisions and fatalities per capita continue to decrease. Cyclist collisions also have decreased in the last 10 years. An area of serious concern though is that Pedestrian collision remain on an upward trend for the last 10 years. Staff have been working hard to determine the suitable countermeasures to reduce pedestrian collision rates. Those areas that have been ‘retrofitted to be safer’ have indeed seen a decrease in pedestrian collisions.
Here is a summary of the collision data for 2018:
- Total number of reported collisions 6370
- Total number of fatal collisions 6
- Total number of injury collisions 1338
- Total number of cyclist collisions reported 79
- Total number of pedestrian collisions reported 110
