Canada is nearly at 50,000 cases of COVID-19 with 2,700 deaths as a result of the virus. Seventy nine percent or over 2,100 of the deaths were in senior and long term care facilities with Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia being hardest hit according to the government data.

Testing is now being rolled out to all residents of long term care homes in Ontario which help to identify asymptomatic individuals and should help with controlling future outbreaks in the facilities.

According to Canada’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Theresa Tam we have conducted 740,000 tests across Canada so far with a 7% positive rate.

Prisons have also been hard hit in the epidemic with 244 federal inamtes known to be infected according to government reports. Calls for better procedures and for release of low risk inmates continue.
