Rick Nash announced his retirement from hockey at the age of 34 due to unresolved concussion symptoms from a hit last March. Rick is a Canadian former professional NHL left winger who played 15 seasons for the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Boston Bruins.
His management team released a statement on Friday,
“Under the advice of his medical team, the risk of further brain injury is far too great if Rick returns to play. Rick would like to thank everyone who has supported him during this difficult time period.”
Repeated concussions can cause serious long term and short term brain damage, and are linked to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease and other serious diseases like CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) which are fatal.
