New Study Shows Children Who Suffer One Concussion Are Four Times More Likely to Sustain a Subsequent Concussion |

Brain injuries in children are particularly damaging and can be very challenging, and their cases can be challenging for lawyers to represent. The human brain doesn’t finish growing until about the age of 25 which means that the impacts of any injury may not be fully apparent for years after the initial trauma. This makes assessing damages difficult and predicting recovery almost impossible in some cases.
Traditionally it was believed that children with TBI would recover fully as their brains were still growing and that the brain would adapt and recover from damage. A recent study published in the British Journal of Sport Medicine now rejects this premise entirely.
The paper “What is the risk of recurrent concussion in children and adolescents aged 5-18 years? A systematic review and meta-analysis” researched the risk of concussion in children with a previous history of concussion. After examining 7 studies with over 23,000 children it concluded that the risk of sustaining a second concussion after a first one is almost 4 times greater than for those children with no history of TBI.
This highlights the necessity for accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment of concussion in children. It also points to the necessity for strict ‘back to play’ guidelines for parents and coaches.
