Fake Accidents Staged to Make Drivers Slow Down

Quebec police, fire, and ambulance personnel have united in a unique, and hopefully effective attempt to get speeding drivers to slow down. In Quebec, the number one cause of death and injury in car collisions is speed related. Speed kills is the message and the message is being clearly sent.

Officers set up speed traps on a busy roadway one Wednesday morning in Laval. Police pulled over the offending drivers who were then taken to a mock crash scene on a nearby parking lot. The scene was complete with crushed cars from speeding accidents and firefighters using jaws of life to open the cars. They even had a survivor of a serious crash there to talk to drivers about how they can prevent an accident like his.

This was a joint initiative between the Laval Fire Department, Urgence-santé, SAAQ (the Quebec Auto Insurer) and the Quebec Association for People with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It is so successful that it is now an annual event. The drivers that are brought to the site are in fact quite impacted by what they see and hear.

On Twitter, @danspector Dan Spector, a reporter at Global Montreal, tweeted the following to go with the image used in the article.

.@policelaval trying to scare people into slowing down with this mockup of a speeding accident. Pulling speeders over, bringing them here.

First responders, insurers and victim’s groups are all trying to get out the message that safe driving includes following the speed limit, paying attention to the road, and driving without distractions. In essence they want drivers to think twice when behind the wheel of a car to make safety their number one priority.

This is a great initiative and I would be interested to see what impact it would have in chronic speeding areas in the Region.
